Silicon as an element lies beneath carbon in the periodic table and its use as a bioisostere of carbon has been imagined as a means of designing novel drugs with some of ths properties of carbon but also some of the unique properties of silicon. In many cases silicon analogues of existing drugs show vastly varied properties and potencies. Sergio’s research involved the development of novel silicon containing small molecules from a molecular modelling and synthetic approach which target acetylcholinesterase as anti-Alzheimer’s agents
